While all three movements employ extensive tuning changes (don't run away just yet!) you will find this work most enjoyable to play and listen to! The opening movement is rhythmical and encompasses three distinct and contrasting sections in 3/4, alternating 5/8 & 7/8, and 6/8. The second movement is slow, very melodic, and reflective - a nice piece to teach and practice ear training. The final movement is loosely based on the rhythms of traditional Latin beats. This "dance" includes an optional cadenza and ends with a flourish of new material intermingled with several previous themes. A great recital piece for the serious timpanist.
